Inviting God Into Your Life
While this is not the only way, here’s a quick prayer that you can use open your heart to him:
- Sincerely confess the things that you have done wrong in your life and ask for his forgiveness.
- Thank him for sending his son to die for you so that you can be forgiven.
- Tell him you are ready to trust him and invite him to enter all of your thoughts, words, and deeds.
If you sincerely prayed this prayer, congratulations! You’ve taken the first step toward a life-restoring relationship with God! Now watch for his presence. It could be a thought in your mind that you know is not your own, a message that you read or hear that stands out as a purely good answer to your prayers, or a peaceful, warm, or tingly feeling. Keep repeating this prayer every day or even several times during the day until you feel his presence.
As you start to experience God, continue to invite him into all your hurts, fears, and dark places. Doing this takes you deeper into a relationship with him and allows him to more completely heal and change you. Keep talking to him in prayer and keep listening for him, especially in quiet times. It will also help to connect to other believers, who can encourage you, help you better understand and grow in this new relationship, and keep the relationship on the right track. If you’re not already part of a church community, we offer some suggestions on finding and connecting with one that will bless you on our Finding a Church page.
What does God say about…
Having a relationship with God has so many benefits, but getting his guidance is one of the best. If you want to know what God has to say to you, start with what he’s already said. A good way to do that is by studying the God-inspired words that are in the Bible.
If you’re not sure about who God is and what a relationship with him might mean, a Bible study is a good way to explore those questions. And if you’ve recently put God in charge of your life, or have been a believer for a while but want to deepen your faith, a Bible study should help you do that as well. If you’re looking for a place to start, our founder, Michael, put together a 12-week Bible study specifically for individuals who are working to stop hurting the ones they love. It includes many of his favorite passages–ones that spoke directly to him and his situation when he was working to change. We think it will do the same for you. Click the button below for a free copy.
