Inviting God Into Your Life
A relationship with God is the most life-giving relationship possible. If you’ve never done so, we encourage you to invite God into your life. If you did at one time but the relationship has gone stale, we encourage you to renew that invitation. When God sees you moving toward him, he finds you and the rest of the relationship between you will come naturally. This process of inviting God into your life and having him meet you may seem odd and confusing, but you’ll just have to trust us on it until you experience it for yourself.
While this is not the only way, here’s a quick prayer that you can use open your heart to him:
- Sincerely confess the things that you have done wrong in your life and ask for his forgiveness.
- Thank him for sending his son to die for you so that you can be forgiven.
- Tell him you are ready to trust him and invite him to enter all of your thoughts, words, and deeds.
If you sincerely prayed this prayer, congratulations! You’ve taken the first step toward a life-restoring relationship with God! Now watch for his presence. It could be a thought in your mind that you know is not your own, a message that you read or hear that stands out as a purely good answer to your prayers, or a peaceful, warm, or tingly feeling. Keep repeating this prayer every day or even several times during the day until you feel his presence.
As you start to experience God, continue to invite him into all your hurts, fears, and dark places. Doing this takes you deeper into a relationship with him and allows him to more completely heal and change you. Keep talking to him in prayer and keep listening for him, especially in quiet times. It will also help to connect to other believers, who can encourage you, help you better understand and grow in this new relationship, and keep the relationship on the right track. If you’re not already part of a church community, we offer some suggestions on finding and connecting with one that will bless you on our Finding a Church page.
